Become the Safety Star
The Safety Stars Program started this January. Lev Betev, specialist of the Labour Protection Department tells us why it is needed, how it works and why participation in it is beneficial to employees.

In 2019, our Company was certified according to the new international standard "Occupational Health and Safety Management System" ISO 45001.

One of the key requirements of the standard is the continuous improvement of the management system and the increase in the level of occupational safety of employees.

The Safety Stars Program has become one of the tools aimed at improving the safety culture in production.
The program is designed for one year and covers only employees of Beko from production divisions.

This is due to the high risks of this category of employees because there are many potentially hazardous areas and situations in the production.

Our task is to help minimize these risks, reduce the level of injuries and prevent accidents, primarily by raising the awareness of the employees themselves.


How everything is arranged
The participants were divided into teams of 15-20 people, according to their workshops and sites. Each participant was given a "start-up capital" - 1000 points. Points are deducted for violation of occupational safety rules and, on the contrary, are added for safe behaviour and ideas for improvement.

Violations are detected by employees of the Labour Protection Department (LPD) during weekly audits at the production site (Field Level) and by the foremen responsible for the workflow safety.

The supervising employee must notify a colleague about the violation and conduct a preventive conversation with him, if necessary, initiate an unscheduled briefing. It is also his responsibility to identify the causes of the violation, and if it can lead to an injury then to undertake urgent measures to eliminate it.

The LPD employee or the foreman records the violation on special forms, which are then transferred to the Labour Protection Department and are entered into the program database.
Also, any employee can take the initiative, contribute into safety at production and earn points in the Safety Stars Program.

To do this, he needs to inform the foreman or submit to the Labour Protection Department the information about a possible emergency that he has noticed, a breakdown at his workplace or site, unsafe behaviour of another employee etc.
A special form with the employee's comments is filled in by the foreman and submitted to the LPD.

How can you earn and not lose?
The Labour Protection Department summarizes the interim results on a monthly basis and introduces them to the team with the help of information stands and screens.
Awards are held quarterly – the best three teams and the best three employees are awarded. In December, the best team and the best employee will be determined based on the results of the whole year.

Individual classification
For an accident at the workplace that occurrs due to the fault of an employee, 500 personal points are deducted from him.

For unsafe behavior (smoking in undesignated areas, incompliance with instructions, non-use of personal protective equipment etc.), an employee loses 100 points for the first violation, 150 points for the second, 225 points for the third and 338 points for the fourth violation.

For the first place in the individual classification, an employee receives 7000 roubles, for the second – 5000 roubles, for the third – 3000 roubles.

Team classification
The team that has had no accidents receives 500 points.

A team receives 125,000 roubles for the first place, 75,000 roubles for the second one and 50,000 roubles for the third place.

The total award is divided among all team members, except those who have less than 500 individual points.

Their share is divided among all team members who have more than 500 individual points.
