EcoBeko
Chief ecologist of Arçelik appreciated the green
practicies at the "Beko" plant
Hadi Özbulut, a leading environmental specialist, coordinator of Arçelik foreign plants in the field of environmental safety, visited the city of Kirzhach for the first time and noted the best approaches that are used in our production.
Aliya Ghilmullina,
environmental engineer at the "Beko" plant:

– Hadi Özbulut is a professional with extensive experience. He recently became the coordinator of all foreign plants of the Arçelik Corporation and planned to familiarize himself with their activities in the field of environmental safety. He decided to start with plants in Russia and came to the cities of Lipetsk and Kirzhach. We showed him the workshops, production lines, and office premises. Based on the results of the trip, he compiled a report with recommendations.

His task was to see the main issues and also study the best practices. The first step was to identify the opportunities to increase the use of recycled water. Our sustainable development goals set a figure of 70% - this is exactly the volume of water we must recycle by 2030. Our plant today recycles 15%, and the figure for other plants is even less - only 8%. In addition, our plant has one of the highest value of total water consumption among all the plant, so the head office is especially interested in increasing the percentage of recycled water used, which will lead to a logical reduction in total artesian water consumption.
70% of water in production should be recycled by 2030
The head office promised to help with investments, and Hadi Özbulut came, among other goals, to assess what kind of help we would need. In the meantime, the project is under development, we are doing everything possible at the local level.

We already use small amounts of recycled water in painting: less contaminated water - in baths, which have lower purification requirements. This year we are going to launch a project on "gray water" - the use of relatively clean water from, for example, laboratories for sewage discharges.

The final task is to become self-sufficient, using a minimum of external resources. In general, the main goal of sustainable development of all companies and entire states is to move to a circular economy. Of course, the task is not easy, but step by step we are moving towards it.
The main water consumers at the plant are the painting shop, washing machine audit laboratories and the washing machine testing line, as well as administrative and utility rooms. We have already begun working on a large project to introduce a system for water purification and its recycling. The transition to 70% recycling will require the erection of additional treatment facilities and the purchase of new equipment - this is a very serious amount of modernization work, which requires financial and other resources.
Also, when visiting the plant, Hadi Özbulut noted the installation in the plastic workshop - last year they began to reprocess the solvent waste: they are distilled and reused. This practice reduced both the overall volume of waste and the cost of purchasing the solvent. He also noted the pulse counters among the best practices. He saw them for the first time and was truly amazed that they were so practical and cheap. He also liked the automatic water treatment control system in the washing machine energy efficiency laboratory.
Hadi Özbulut,
Leading Environmental Specialist at Arçelik:

– I came to Russia for the first time, but I have already been to post-Soviet countries before, so I am a little bit familiar with your culture. Despite the limited time, I noticed that the Russian cities I visited were very clean and in general everything was well organized. And, of course, my colleagues helped make my short visit as effective as possible.

My trip to Russia was very productive. I came back with valuable ideas based on the best practices I saw at the "Beko" and IHP plants.

The Kirzhach plant and its treatment facilities are generally in good condition, and the quality of wastewater meets the requirements for reuse. This year we will be working intensively with the Beko LLC team in the field of wastewater recycling.

Another important challenge to be dealt with is the need to bring the hazardous waste storage area and chemical storage area up to Arçelik Global's internal standards.

I highly appreciate the Beko LLC team, they are always ready to help the colleagues - online or in person. Their consistent and timely execution of duties is commendable. My plans are to invite the Russian colleagues to Turkey to discuss upcoming investments.
